Ministry of Commerce held Organic & Natural Expo 2014 during July 24 – 27, 2014 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. This was Thailand’s largest trade show for organic and natural products and services. In the event, Ministry of Commerce also held the “Organic Symposium 2014” on July 25, 2014.
There was the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the promotion and development of organic product market. It aimed to promote the image of Thailand’s organic products and services to be widely known both domestically and internationally, support operational market development, encourage Thai consumers to buy more organic products, as well as build a network of production, trading, and expand Thailand’s organic products both in local and foreign markets.
All 9 agencies included 1) Ministry of Commerce 2) Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives 3) Ministry of Public Health 4) National Innovation Agency 5) Thai Health Promotion Foundation 6) Thai Social Enterprise Office 7) The Thai Organic Trade Association 8) Health Society Company Limited, and 9) Central Food Retail Company Limited.
Miss Chutima Bunyapraphasara, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Commerce, said that Ministry of Commerce aimed to make products and services business of organic farming to be recognized both in Thailand and abroad. Government of Thailand contributed to promote natural lifestyle, conservative environmental rehabilitation, monoculture farming reduction, chemicals and genetic engineering reduction, to decrease anxiety and build confidence to consumers around the world, especially to promote health care of product makers and consumers, and to enhance well-being of people in the country sustainably.
From such concept, the Ministry requested cooperation from relevant agencies, both public and private partners, to create networks among all the parties involved to develop organic farming in Thailand to meet international standards. The main approach to drive organic product market was divided into two major approaches.
1. Development of Organic Agriculture: Supporting knowledge about health safety of farmers, techniques used in the planting, cultivating, and processing, as well as product benefits for local consumption, and distributed to target groups.
2. Development of Commercial Organic Agriculture: Government agencies under the National Organic Agriculture Development Committee jointly facilities and attend for various transactions ranging from local farmers to exporters, to create fairness and trading motivation, by providing information of marketing, development guidelines for product processing, packaging, to meet the standard of each market, logistics system, and increase sales spaces of organic products to support communities both in province and country level, and export to foreign markets.
“The primary mission of the Ministry of Commerce from now on will strive to build a commercial potential of Thailand organic agriculture to international level, promote the expansion of organic products, both domestically and internationally, for food and non-food products, and service business, along with support research and development of organic product processing. The ministry shall cooperate with all agencies in an integrated way to achieve the goal of becoming a center for production and export of organic products to the world market.” said Miss Chutima.
